This story was inspired by some of the more light-hearted science fiction I read in my teens, like Harry Harrison’s Stainless Steel Rat series, and the lighter moments from Larry Niven’s Ringworld books. There’s probably a fair bit of inspiration from Star Trek: the original series and UK sci-fi comic 2000AD lurking in there, too, and quite possibly 1970s Disney film The Cat from Outer Space. I really hate to think what a cross-section of my subconscious would actually look like...

If I’d ever come across Guardians of the Galaxy and Peter “Star-Lord” Quill at the time I wrote it, Gifted in Tongues would probably have taken inspiration from that as well. I like to think Spitz and Peter would be good drinking buddies.
